APRIL 1 is the deadline for filing your Homestead Exemption!
Filing for Homestead Exemption can help you to save drastically on your property taxes for your primary residence. When you purchase a home that you plan to live in, you will have an opportunity to file for Homestead Exemption, which allows you to exclude a portion of your home's value from assessment, in other words, you pay less in property taxes.
About 8 weeks after you close on your home purchase, the closing attorney who handled your closing will mail you a copy of your original recorded deed. This is your proof that the closing has been recorded with the county in which you live, as part of their official deed books. Once you receive the recorded deed, you then have until April 1 of the following year to file your Homestead Exemption. If you miss that deadline, you will have to wait to file again for the next year. However, you only need to file for Homestead Exemption one time; once you complete the filing, you do not have to file again for that home for as long as it is your primary residence.
Every county is different and handles the Homestead Exemption application process differently. Please click here for links to each county office, as well as general information about filing for your county.
