Winter 2025 is here, and it brings a fresh wave of interior design trends that blend comfort, style, and functionality. Whether you’re looking to update your current space or find inspiration for your new home, these ideas will help create a cozy yet chic environment. Here are 10 way you can incorporate these interior design trends for the season...and into the rest of the year.
1. Warm Neutrals with Bold Accents
Neutral color palettes remain timeless, but Winter 2025 is all about adding a twist. Think beige, cream, and taupe paired with bold accents like emerald green, navy blue, or rust orange. These pops of color can come through in throw pillows, rugs, or statement furniture pieces.
Tip: Layer neutrals with textured fabrics such as wool, velvet, or faux fur for added depth and warmth.
Maura's Note: This is the perfect opportunity for you to pick that bold favorite color of yours, the one you're reluctant to splash all over the house, in one statement wall or accent piece. Don't be afraid of your favorite hue - this trend says find a piece that speaks to you and let it make you happy every time you walk into the room.
2. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials
Sustainability is more than a trend; it’s a movement. This season, focus on furniture and decor made from reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled materials. Look for pieces with a natural finish to emphasize their organic beauty.
Tip: Incorporate houseplants to enhance air quality and bring a natural touch indoors.
Maura's Note: Houseplants are the perfect way to bring natural textures into your home. My kitchen is a perfect example, where we have fresh flowers and potted herbs on the counters throughout the year. 3. Statement Lighting
Lighting is taking center stage in Winter 2025. Oversized pendant lights, sculptural lamps, and vintage-inspired chandeliers are perfect for adding character to any room.
Tip: Opt for warm-toned bulbs to create a soft, inviting ambiance during chilly evenings.
Maura's Note: I have always loved the way lighting can completely transform a room -- and I love that the first change so many of our clients make when they move into a new home is to update and personalize the lighting. From my very first home to the house I live in now, lighting has been a simple and effective way that I have made the space my own. Are there light fixtures you've always wanted to change or replace in your home? Maybe now is the time to find the perfect piece!
4. Cozy Nooks and Reading Corners
Create a dedicated space to unwind with a cozy nook. A plush armchair, layered throws, and a small side table can transform a corner into your new favorite spot.
Tip: Position your nook near a window to take advantage of natural light and add a floor lamp for nighttime reading.
Maura's Note: I love a book nook, and I have cozy reading spots all over my house. A comfy chair, good lighting, a cozy blanket -- I just bring the mug of tea and the good book! Make sure your home has a favorite comfy spot where you can curl up and escape into a great story.
5. Textured Walls
Walls are getting a makeover this winter. From limewash finishes to wood paneling and textured wallpapers, these elements add personality and dimension to your interiors.
Tip: Try a statement wall in a living room or bedroom to make the trend stand out without overwhelming the space.
Maura's Note: Remember when textured walls were every home buyer's (and REALTOR®'s) nightmare? Most trends come back around again, and this renaissance is one that is very interesting. From shiplap to textured wallpaper, there's sometime for any homeowner in this trend!
6. Maximalist Art Displays
Gallery walls and large, colorful artworks are in vogue this season. Showcase your personality with bold prints, abstract pieces, or even framed textiles.
Tip: Mix and match frame styles and sizes for an eclectic look.
Maura's Note: I have a favorite Instagram account, Daniel Barrett Mathis' @notaminimalist. While his décor may be a little overwhelming for some, his style might just be the maximalist inspiration you need for your next gallery wall or to display your favorite collection.
7. Earthy Tones in Kitchens and Bathrooms
The kitchen and bathroom are embracing earthy tones like terracotta, olive green, and sandy beige. These hues bring warmth and a sense of grounding to often overlooked spaces.
Tip: Update cabinetry or add these colors through tiles, rugs, or decorative elements.
Maura's Note: I'm a white kitchen loyalist, but even I can get behind natural color pops in the kitchen -- from my perennial vase of limelight hydrangeas on my kitchen island to the dried magnolia wreath on my pantry door. How will you make this work in your kitchen or bathroom space?
8. Soft, Curved Furniture
Say goodbye to sharp edges and hello to curves. Rounded sofas, circular coffee tables, and arched mirrors are popular for their soft, inviting look.
Tip: Pair curved furniture with geometric decor for a balanced aesthetic.
Maura's Note: Round dining room tables, oval coffee tables, even the rounded edges of a reclaimed wood piece -- softer edges prevail in my house. They make the space feel more comfortable than hard, square edges -- I feel like a trendsetter here.
9. Layered Lighting
Gone are the days of relying on a single light source. Winter 2025 highlights the importance of layered lighting—a combination of overhead lights, wall sconces, and table lamps.
Tip: Dimmer switches can help you adjust the mood for different times of day.
Maura's Note: I love that a subtle change of lighting can change my mood -- from a bright lamp for reading a good book to the same light dimmed for movie night. And with today's technology and the ability to control your lighting from an app on your phone -- not just turning lights on and off, but dimming them, changing their color and tone, and so much more -- lighting can play an even bigger role in your home's personality than ever!
10. Luxurious Textiles
Winter is all about comfort, and luxurious textiles play a big role. Velvet, cashmere, and chunky knit throws add a sense of indulgence to any room.
Tip: Choose deep jewel tones like ruby, sapphire, or amethyst to make your textiles pop.
Maura's Note: Now we're talking! Cozy throw blankets are the name of the game in my house, not just in winter but all year long. They reside in every room, thrown over the arm of a chair or the back of a couch, rolled up in baskets ready to be put to use, casually discarded where the last user was sitting. And they come in all textures - fluffy, fleecey, soft, big, small, made for two or perfect for one.
