SANDY SPRINGS, is a city in northern Fulton County, north of Atlanta. The area remained rural until the early 1960s when Georgia 400 and Interstate 285 were constructed, connecting the Sandy Springs community to metro Atlanta and bringing major land development and new residents. The city was incorporated in December 2005, becoming the third largest city to ever incorporate in the U.S. Prior to that, its inhabitants resisted annexation by the city of Atlanta. Sandy Springs has a population of 93,853, as determined by the 2010 census. The boundaries of Sandy Springs are Atlanta to the south, Cobb County (at the Chattahoochee River) to the west and north, Roswell (also at the river) to the north, and Dunwoody and Brookhaven, at the DeKalb County line, to the east. A small panhandle in the northeast extends between the Chattahoochee River to the north and Dunwoody to the south, ending in a very small border with Peachtree Corners in Gwinnett County.
