NORCROSS is a city of 4.1 square miles in Gwinnett County in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area; however, much of western Gwinnett has a Norcross mailing address. The city was chartered in 1870 and named for former Atlanta Mayor Jonathan Norcross. Prior to that, the Creek and Cherokee Indians occupied the area along the eastern continental divide, or ridge, along which the Norcross Historic Districts sits. The ridge later became the major transportation route between Fort Daniel (at Hog Mountain near Dacula to the north) and Peachtree Fort (in Atlanta). The city has preserved its small town charm while as new restaurants and shops have been added to the downtown area. The population of Norcross was 9,116 in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.
