LAWRENCEVILLE is the county seat of Gwinnett County. It was incorporated in 1821 and serves as the second oldest city in the metro Atlanta area. It was named for Commodore James Lawrence, who commanded the frigate Chesapeak during the War of 1812. Former world heavyweight boxing champion Ezzard Charles and comic actor Oliver Hardy were both born in Lawrenceville. The 2010 census estimates that 28,546 people live in Lawrenceville’s six zip codes.
