DECATUR is the county seat of DeKalb County and has a population of 20,148, as of the 2013 census. Multiple zip codes seem to imply that the city is larger than its 4.17 square miles. The neighborhoods of Downtown Decatur, McDonugh-Adams-Kings, Adair Park and Sycamore Ridge are part of the city. As part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, Decatur is an intown suburb of Atlanta and is served by three MARTA rail stations. The official motto is “A city of homes, schools, and places of worship.”
Originally intended to be the southernmost stop on the Western and Atlantic Railroad in the 1830s, Decatur’s citizens rejected the idea, and Atlanta was born. A marker at the courthouse marks the site of a Civil War skirmish following the occupation of the city in 1864. Today, Decatur boasts a small, mixed-use district with easy transportation to downtown Atlanta and a high level of citizen involvement to maintain a small town character.
