ATLANTA is the capital and most populous city in Georgia with an estimated 2013 population of 447,841 and serves as the economic and cultural center of the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Greater Atlanta metropolitan area is home to 5,522,942 people. The city is the county seat of Fulton County and a small portion extends to the east into DeKalb County.
Atlanta is divided into 242 official neighborhoods. Three high-rise districts, Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead, lie along Peachtree and are surrounded by low-to-medium density, single-family homes. Downtown houses government buildings, sporting venues, most of the tourist attractions, and the majority of office space in the metro area. Midtown is the city’s second-largest business district, home to many of the region’s law firms and has many of Atlanta’s art institutions, cultural attractions, and institutions of higher education. Buckhead, the city’s uptown district eight miles north of Downtown, is the city’s third-largest business district; it is surrounded by suburban single-family neighborhoods in dense forests and rolling hills.
